This page provides instructions for running a Sophos virus scan on both Windows and Mac. Sophos is an anti-virus utility provided for your laptop on both the Mac and Windows operating systems. Sophos is set up to perform a weekly scan of your hard drive. If you think you are infected with a virus, running a Sophos scan manually can get rid of the virus faster. Please allow several hours for the virus scan to run.
- If Sophos is not installed on your machine for some reason, click one of the following links to learn how to install Sophos on Mac or install Sophos on Windows.
- If at any point, you cannot follow these instructions because of a grayed out option, or if the controls do not load, or if the Sophos interface does not look the same as it does in these pictures, it is possible that a virus is stopping you from running a Sophos scan. If this is the case, bring your laptop into Support Central and we can check in the computer and run the scans for you.
Update Sophos (If Needed)
- Find the Sophos icon in the bottom-right corner of the Windows toolbar. It may be hidden from the current view with an arrow. If so, click the arrow to reveal your hidden icons.
- Right-click the Sophos icon.
- Select "Update now" from the resulting drop-down menu.
After Sophos Updates, Open Sophos
- Right-click the Sophos icon again.
- Select "Open Sophos Endpoint and Security."
Click "Yes" to Authenticate if This Window Appears
Click "Scan my computer"
Wait
This window should appear, and the virus scan will start. The scan could take several hours.
A Summary of the Results Will Appear
- The summary will display the number of problematic items detected on your computer.
- The summary will also display the number of items it has passed to into quarantine. Once a virus is in quarantine, it is no longer able to run. You may choose actions to perform on the quarantined items in the Quarantine Manager.
- Click "Quarantine" to view the Quarantine Manager.
To Clean Up a Virus, Click "Clean up" Under the "Available actions" Column Heading
