Parallels - Set Up Windows as a Virtual Machine from Existing Boot Camp Partition

Parallels is an application that allows you to run Windows inside of the Mac OS.  It 'virtualizes' running Windows.  You can use parallels to use Windows programs inside of the Mac OS.  

This page provides instructions for setting up the latest version of Parallels, Parallels 8.

  1. Select "Use Windows from Bootcamp."
  2. Click "Continue."

  1. Enter your OC username.
  2. Enter your OC password.
  3. Click the arrow or press the "enter" key.

 

 

Coherence Mode

You are now in "Coherence Mode," which means that your Windows applications work just like your Mac applications. You can run Windows applications on your Mac Desktop.

Coherence Mode is the default view in Parallels. There is also full screen, window, and modality.

  1. As the introductory window explains, you can access your Windows start menu by right-clicking on the Parallels icon on your menu bar at the top of your screen.
  2. You can also access the start menu by clicking on the Parallels Desktop icon in your dock.
  3. Use the start menu to open any application or document that you wish.

To access different views of the Virtual Machine,

  1. Click on the Parallels icon on your menu bar at the top of your screen.
  2. Select "Exit Coherence."
  3. A window titled "My Boot Camp – Parallels Desktop" will pop up that looks like a Windows desktop. This is "Window view."
  4. To enter "Full Screen view," click on the arrows in the top-right corner of the Windows Virtual Machine window.

You have now finished setting up Parallels 8. When you are done using Windows 7 make sure you Shut Down Windows 7 from the Start Menu and then Quit Parallels.

  1. Click on the Windows icon (or, if you are in Coherence mode, choose one of the two options to open the start menu discussed in the "Start Menu" step) to open the Start Menu.
  2. Click "Shut down."
