My microphone cord is connected to the microphone jack on the left side of my laptop, but it is not recording anything.
What should I do? Are there any settings that I can check?
Check the microphone levels.
Click the windows button, and type 'sound' into search. In the results that appear, click on the 'sound' option under Control Panel.
In the window that appears, click on the "Recording" tab. Make sure your microphone is selected. Next, click properties.
In the resulting dialogue, click on the "Levels" tab. You can now drag the slider to adjust the microphone levels. Click "OK" when you are done.
On the Mac operating system
Open system Preferences, and click on the 'sound' icon. From there, select the "input" tab. Make sure your microphone is selected. You should be able to change the levels for the microphone now.
