Microphone Troubleshooting - Windows 7

My microphone cord is connected to the microphone jack on the left side of my laptop, but it is not recording anything. What should I do? Are there any settings that I can check?

Open Sound Properties

  1. From the Start Menu type sound into search.  
  2. In the results that appear, click on the sound option under Control Panel.

Recording Properties

  1. Navigate to the Recording tab
  2. Click the Microphone option
  3. Click Properties

Levels

Levels
  1. In the resulting dialogue, click on the Levels tab.
  2. You can drag the slider to adjust the microphone levels.  
  3. Click OK when you are done.

You have successfully adjusted your microphone levels.
