This article explains how Department Chairs and Deans can add an instructor/TA/GA or any other role to a Canvas course. Once added, the instructor will receive an invitation and will appear in the course's People list with a "pending" status until they accept it.
Step 1: Log in to Canvas.
Go to OC’s Canvas login page and sign in with your username and password.
Step 2: Open the Admin panel.
After entering your username and password, you will be redirected to Courses Page. However, you need to click on the "Admin" tab in the left-hand menu.
Step 3: Click Courses under Admin.
From the Admin panel, click Oklahoma Christian University. This displays every course in Canvas, along with its status, term, teacher, sub-account (department), and enrollment count.
Step 4: Search for the course.
Use the search box in the top-right corner to find the specific course you want to add an instructor to. You can search by course name or course/SIS code (for example, ENGL-1213).
Note: Canvas is case-sensitive when it comes to course IDs. Make sure you spell the course ID exactly as it appears. If a course ID contains a hyphen and you leave it out, the course will not appear.
Step 5: Open the course and go to People.
Click the course name to open it. Once inside the course, click People in the course's left-hand navigation menu.
Step 6: Enter the instructor/TA/GA email address and their role.
Step 7: Confirm the instructor was added.
Back on the People page, the new instructor will appear in the list with a Teacher role and a pending tag next to their name. The pending status will clear once the instructor accepts the email invitation and logs in to Canvas.
Note: Only users with Chair, Dean, or other Admin-level access can add instructors this way. If you don't see an Admin option in the Global Navigation menu, contact your Canvas administrator.
