Publish Course in Canvas
When a course is created in Canvas, it is unpublished by default. Students cannot access the course or see any course content until the course is published. This guide walks you through the steps to make course available to students.
Step 1: After logging inside canvas dashboard, locate the course you want to publish.
Step 2: Open the course and navigate to the right navigation bar with course status
Step 3: Click publish button. You can either choose to “publish All Modules and Items” or “publish modules only”
Publish All Modules and Items will publish the course modules and every item inside them, including pages, assignments, quizzes, discussions, and files. Publish Modules Only will publish the module titles, but students will not be able to access the content inside the modules. Use this option if you want students to see your course structure without accessing the content yet.
Unpublish Course in Canvas
If you need to hide a course from students especially when updating content or correcting mistakes, you can unpublish the course. A course can only be unpublished if there are no graded submissions. This guide shows the steps and indicators to help you unpublish a course safely.
Step 1: Log into Canvas and navigate to desired course in Dashboard
Step 2: In the course, look at the right-hand sidebar for the Course Status panel. If the course is available, you will see a green Published button.
Step 3: To unpublish the course, choose either Unpublish Modules and Items or Unpublish Modules Only.
Note: Canvas blocks the Unpublish button if a course has graded submissions or graded discussions, meaning the course itself cannot be unpublished, but individual modules or items can still be unpublished as needed. Unpublish All Modules and Items hides both modules and everything inside them, while Unpublish Modules Only hides just the module and leaves its items in their current publish state, which may still allow students to access them elsewhere in the course.
