Label Email Messages - Gmail

You can add labels to your inbox messages to help keep your messages organized. This answer shows you how to add tags and labels to your email messages. For these instructions, please log in to your Gmail account. If you do not know how to log in to your OC email account, please see our instructions on how to Access Google Apps.

Select Inbox Message

  1. Go to 'Inbox'
  2. Select any email message you would like to add a label to.

Select 'Tag'

Select the "tag" above the Inbox messages.
  • Select the 'Tag' Icon from the menu bar above your messages.

Select Tag

  1. Select which tag you would like to assign to this message. (You can assign multiple if you would like)
  2. Click 'Apply'

Create Tag

  1. Click the 'Tag' icon
  2. Type in your label name
  3. Click 'Apply' to add label to message
  4. Click '(create new)' to customize the label options.

The messages will automatically be separated into the folders associated with the tags you have assigned.

Remove Tags

Select Labeled Message

  1. Go to your Inbox
  2. Select a Labeled Message you wish to remove a tag from
  3. You will see the label in a grey box on your message

Remove Tag

  1. At the top of the message, view which tags are available to remove.
  2. Click the 'x' on the tag to remove it.

Removing the 'Inbox' label will archive the message.


You have successfully, created a tag, tagged, and/or removed a tag from a message in your inbox.
