Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within your learning management system (LMS). Follow the steps below to install it on your device.
For Window and Mac Computers
- Click HERE to install Lockdown Browser.
- Click the yellow Install Now button on the right-hand side of the screen.
- Once Downloaded, open the resulting file and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Done — LockDown Browser is now ready for use.
For Chromebooks
For the Chromebooks, you will need to use a chrome extension to use the Respondus lockdown browser.
To install LockDown Browser for Chromebook:
- Log in to the Chromebook and launch Google Chrome.
- Log in to Blackboard and navigate to the “Lockdown Browser Practice Quiz,” which has a download link attached to it. Typically, the Lockdown Browser Practice Quiz” is located in either the “Exams” tab, the “Course Information” tab, or the “Getting Started” tab, depending on where your professor has moved it.
- Select the “Download and Install Respondus LockDown Browser” link to initiate software download and installation.
- From the Chrome web store, select “Add to Chrome” to install the LockDown Browser Extension.
5. An "Add LockDown Browser?" pop-up window will display; select Add Extension.
6. The LockDown Browser for Chromebook extension has been installed.
7. Restart your Chromebook.
8. Navigate to the quiz or exam in Blackboard that requires Respondus lockdown Browser, click on start the exam and LockDown Browser will launch itself.
9. Lockdown Browser will take you through multiple steps for identification purposes before taking the exam. The exact steps will vary depending on your professor’s settings.
10. The last step is beginning your exam.
Limitations and/or known issues with LockDown Browser for Chromebook:
- Spreadsheet features aren’t currently supported.
- The extended keyboard functions (for adding symbols and special characters) isn’t currently available
- LockDown Browser’s “Help Center” is currently unavailable.
Chromebook- How to Clear Cache/Cookies
Cookies and Cache saved in your Chrome browser can sometimes cause interference when using LockDown Browser for Chromebook. We recommend you do the following:
1. Clear out problematic cookies using the built-in utility found in LockDown Browser for Chromebook.
First, "pin" the LockDown Browser extension to the Chrome toolbar.
Next, click on the pinned extension, and a select group of cookies will be deleted.
This method does not delete all cookies on the Chromebook.
A confirmation message of the deletion will appear.
In most cases, using the built-in utility will resolve the problem, and you should be able to take your exam.
2) If necessary, you can also use the below three steps to clear all cookies and cache on your Chromebook.
a) Enter the following in the URL address bar in Chrome: Chrome://settings/clearBrowserData
b) Select "All time" for Time Range
c) Select "Cookies and other site data," then click the "clear data" button.
3) If necessary, also clear all site data:
a) Enter the following in the URL address bar in Chrome: chrome://settings/siteData
b) Click the "Remove All" button to delete all leftover cookies and site data. A pop-up window may appear, asking you to confirm. Click the "clear all" button in this pop-up.
c) Restart your Chromebook, then log into your Learning Management System and navigate first to your course, then to the relevant content area and try to take your quiz.
