If you use Google Chrome, we recommended you sign into your OC profile on Google Chrome before continuing with this recipe. If you need help doing that, please refer to the following article: How to Create/Change a Google Chrome Profile
Create an Account
Step 1: To record using ScreenPal, we recommend you go to http://screenpal.com first, and select "login" in the upper right hand corner.
Step 2: If you've never logged in before, it is recommended that you "Sign in with Google."
Step 3: If you're in your OC Google Profile, you should see your OC email address. Select that account.
If you don't see your OC Google Profile, enter your OC email address.
How to create a video
Step 4: If you would like to record a video, click on the recording button in the upper right hand corner of your screen.
ScreenPal will begin downloading its software to your computer. Once it is finished downloading, it will prompt you to launch it. A new recording box will appear which looks like the following picture.
- Select "Screen," if you only want to record your computer screen.
- Select "Camera," if you only want to record yourself.
- Select "Both," if you want to record yourself while recording your computer screen.
- For the "Size," it is recommended to record your Fullscreen.
- Unless you are using a special microphone, leave "Narration" alone.
- Only select "Computer Audio" if you're going to play sounds/music on your computer during your video that you want to be part of the video. Example: Playing a clip of a song during your video.
Step 5: Once the settings are what you want, select the large red "REC" button to begin recording your video.
Step 6: Once you're done recording, press the pause button.
Once you've paused the recording, you'll see a taskbar like the one pictured below. If you press the record button again, it will continue recording where you left off. If you select the trash button, it will ask if you want to start over. When you're all done with the recording, though, select "Done."
Step 7: Select whether you would like to edit, quick share, or save/upload the video. For the purposes of this article, we will select "Save / Upload."
Step 8: A new window will pop up, which is pictured below. Select what you want to name your video.
Step 9: For the purposes of this article, select "Upload to ScreenPal."
Step 10: Select all of the settings that you want to apply to your video, pictured below. If you have questions about settings that are not covered here, please reach out to the northinstitute@oc.edu.
- Make sure the title is what you want it to be.
- If you select "Highlight cursor," then the video will have a bright yellow circle around the cursor during the video. You can deselect this option, if you do not want to draw attention to the cursor.
- In terms of "visibility," it is typical for most videos to select "unlisted," as this means only the people who you have shared the link with will be able to access the video.
Step 11: Publish the video.
Step 12: A new window will pop-up while the video is uploading. Select "continue in background." After a few minutes, go back to your browser tab from which you originally launched the recording. If for any reason you closed it out, simply revisit screenpal.com and sign in again. Your new uploaded video should be visible.
Step 13: Locate your video and hover over it. Select the three dots in the upper left hand corner, and in the following menu select "Share."
Step 14: Select how you would like to share your video. You have two choices: you can share it as a link or you can embed the video in your course.
- To embed the video into Blackboard (preferred), simply select "copy code" below the code preview box.
- To share a normal link, copy the web address that is right below "Direct Link."
We recommend embedding the video in courses with code (rather than a link), which provides students a professional, inviting experience to your video in Blackboard. Thus, Steps 15-21 focus on embedding the video with code.
If you prefer to offer a web link, continue with Steps 15-18 and then follow the instructions in the next green box.
Notice an embed code is computer script, which is different than a web address.
How to Embed into Blackboard
Step 15: Now, click over into the tab where you are signed into Blackboard.
Step 16: Go to the course that you wish to embed the video into.
Step 17: Go to the area of the course you want the video in, then hover the "Build Content" button.
Step 18: Select the "Item" option.
Step 19: After this, a new window will open up. Give your video a name, and select the embed button.
If posting an instructional video, we recommend adding a brief explanation to your students inside the "Text" box introducing the purpose of the video and the length of time to watch it.
If you are posting a web address, simply paste the web address in the "Text" box. Offering a web address does not require using the embed button.
Step 20: Paste the code into the embed box.
Step 21: Click "Save" and then "Submit."
Success! You have recorded, uploaded, and shared your video.
ScreenPal also offers a paid, upgraded account to instructors who wish to edit their videos (blur items in your video, cut out chunks of time, add written text over video, ect.).
