Edpuzzle is a software that allows instructors to upload videos to embed questions or notes within the videos and then monitor students' responses and interactions. Edpuzzle operates as both a stand-alone website, or it can link to Blackboard. The goal of these instructions is to link Edpuzzle to Blackboard.
When Edpuzzle is linked to Blackboard, students are assigned Edpuzzle videos inside their Blackboard course, and students can't use the stand-alone website to get to the assigned videos--nor use the Edpuzzle app for phones. The main advantage of having Edpuzzle videos assigned in Blackboard is so their grades in Edpuzzle feed into the Blackboard gradebook. A second advantage is allowing the instructor to introduce the video in Blackboard by commenting relevant information before students watch the video.
Part 1: Creating Content in Edpuzzle
Begin by creating an Edpuzzle account using your OC google account.
Then fill your "My Content" section of your account by uploading videos into Edpuzzle and building the interactive content. In some cases, you can simply copy pre-made interactive videos from other instructors.
If you are using videos created by a fellow OC instructor,
- click on "My Network,"
- click to enter the instructor's account,
- click the box with each video you would like to copy, and
- select "Copy" at the bottom of the screen.

Part 2: Create Edpuzzle Links inside Blackboard
OC allows Edpuzzle to link to your Blackboard Course Content and Gradebook. In order to link them, "special" Edpuzzle links must be used. Once you have created interactive videos in Edpuzzle, you are ready to link them to Blackboard.
- Navigate in Blackboard to where you want to add an Edpuzzle video.
- Select the "Build Content" button at the top of the Blackboard page.
- Scroll down in the pop-up box to select "Edpuzzle." Note: Often this long pop-up box requires you to scroll off the the bottom of your computer screen. To scroll down the pop-up box, make sure your cursor is over the pop-up box and then scroll (spin the roller on your mouse or glide 2 fingers simultaneously on your laptop's touch pad).
- A new page will open asking you to create a "Name" for the Edpuzzle assignment. (Ideally, choose the same name as the video in Edpuzzle.) In addition, create a comment for your students with the learning objective for completing the video. (To decide your learning objective, try to answer the questions, "Why do you want your students to watch this video and complete the questions? What learning is the goal?")
- Be sure to toggle "Enable Evaluation" to be on, and select the point value for the assignment. Edpuzzle always grades on a 100-point scale, but if you want the grade to be 1 or 5 or 10 or 20 points in your OC Blackboard course, Edpuzzle will feed a proportional score into Blackboard for you. Note: some of my Edpuzzle videos are set as 0 points even.
- Select "Submit" button in bottom right.
Part 3: Link Edpuzzle Videos to Blackboard Links
If your Blackboard course was copied from a previous instructor's Blackboard course in which you were not the instructor, their Edpuzzle links CAN NOT be used by you. Their Edpuzzle links must be deleted and new ones created that will link to your Edpuzzle account.
Once Edpuzzle links (created in Step 2) have been linked to any instructor's Edpuzzle account, they will always feed to that instructor's account.
New instructors must have new Edpuzzle links.
In contrast, if your Blackboard course has been copied from your previous Blackboard course from an earlier term, your Edpuzzle links are ready to link to your Edpuzzle account.
New links are not needed, but they do have to be relinked every term because each term needs a new shell/gradebook in Edpuzzle (just like Blackboard gets a new shell/gradebook each term).
To link an Edpuzzle link inside Blackboard to its coordinating Edpuzzle video,
- Click the Edpuzzle link in Blackboard.
2. You will be prompted to sign into your Edpuzzle account. Sign in as a teacher, and I recommend you "Sign in with Google," but make sure you are using your OC Google Profile in your browser.
3. Each new semester, Edpuzzle will recognize a new Blackboard course. Thus, Edpuzzle will prompt you to create a new class to coordinate inside Edpuzzle.
Description - Choose a name for your course in Edpuzzle. I recommend typing the Year, Term, and then course ID or name. This allows you to differentiate the various semesters you teach this course inside Edpuzzle. For example, I recently chose "2024 - Spring Term 1 - Math 1223-203."
Grade level - Select "Higher Education."
Subject - Choose the subject most closely matching your own.
Once you have completed the Description, Grade level, and Subject, a "Create Class" button will appear in the top right corner of your screen.
4. Edpuzzle will then open your "My Content" screen offering the interactive videos you've created or copied into your Edpuzzle account.
Navigate to the video you wish to select to assign to your Edpuzzle link inside Blackboard. Click on the video to select it.
5. A new screen opens showing your video, click the "Next" button in the bottom right corner.
6. Another new page opens asking you to choose how many attempts students get to answer the Edpuzzle questions and whether you want to allow students to skip questions.
For my college classes, I choose "1 attempt" the entire semester because I know I'm about to give the answer when the video continues, and I do not want students being able to return to change their answer. In contrast, I toggle on "Prevent skipping" during the first week of class because I want all the content watched, but, later in the course, I allow my students to skip. Edpuzzle tracks what segments students watch and don't watch, which helps me as an instructor call out students who claim they are watching the videos but are skipping chunks of the videos.
7. In the bottom right corner, select the "Assign" button.
8. That video has now been assigned and linked to Blackboard!
Once your students click the link in Blackboard to enter Edpuzzle, their names will populate into this empty space in the "Students" tab. Once there are student names populated, Edpuzzle will provide you ways to see how much a student watched of the video and their answers to any assigned questions.
9. To link a second video from Blackboard to Edpuzzle, you must return back into Blackboard. This is best accomplished by selecting the link at the top (a bread crumb list within Blackboard).
For this photo, the video I was linking between Blackboard was "Lesson 1.1 - Video A - Overview Functions," which was assigned in the Blackboard folder "Lesson 1.1." Thus, to return to Blackboard to link the next video in the "Lesson 1.1" folder, I would click "Lesson 1.1" at the top of the page.
