This recipe shows how to require a user to make a copy any shared Google file type you share with them.
Requiring a copy is useful when a file is shared to students and the instructor doesn't want students/others to edit the original. It is also helpful if you have created a template for students to use, but you need to preserve the original for future use.
For these instructions, please have a Google Doc ready for sharing.
Step 1: At the top right corner of the Google Doc click the Share button.
Step 2: Change the general access permissions to the document to be a Viewer.
The setting Viewer only allows individuals with given access to only be able to view the document.
Step 3: Change the General access to Oklahoma Christian University
Setting it to Oklahoma Christian University allows only individuals with OC emails to be able to access the document link. This can prevent people from outside the university from seeing the file.
Step 4: Copy the link.
Paste the link into blackboard or another location where students can access it.
Step 5: After copying and pasting the link in your desired location change the very end of the URL. Replace edit?usp=sharing and replace it with copy.
Now, all users who select the link will be brought to the Copy Document pages before viewing the document.
Success!
Click Done to exit Sharing Options in Google Drive.
