This article is a guide on how to enable Respondus LockDown Browser to monitor a canvas quiz or Exam. Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that secures the testing environment within Canvas. Once a quiz begins, students cannot open other tabs, copy content, take screenshots, or access other applications until their attempt is submitted. Instructors typically use LockDown Browser to uphold academic integrity on high-stakes assessments.

Step 3: Click LockDown Browser in your Course Navigation. You will see a list of your course quizzes, each marked as either Required or Not Required.

Step 5: Select Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam. To customize security further such as preventing students from exiting before completion, expand the Advanced Settings menu.
Review each Advanced Setting before enabling it. These options change how students interact with the assessment.
- Allow students to take this exam with an iPad – Allows students to use a supported iPad with the Respondus LockDown Browser app.
- Allow access to specific external web domains – Grants access to approved websites during the assessment.
- Allow access to specific applications – Permits approved third-party applications required for the assessment.
- Enable calculator or printing options – Makes additional tools available, depending on your institution's configuration.
Make sure you enable Lock students into the browser until the exam is completed to prevent students from exiting LockDown Browser before submitting the assessment. If enabled, set and save the exit password in a secure location in case a student needs to leave the exam early.
Step 6: Click Save & Close. The quiz status in your LockDown Browser dashboard will now show as Required.
Success ! Your quiz is now marked as Required in the LockDown Browser dashboard. Students must launch LockDown Browser (and Respondus Monitor, if enabled) before starting their attempt. If you have questions or need help, email northinstitute@oc.edu.
