Convert Classic Quizzes by copying your course content, selecting “Convert content to New Quizzes,” and choosing both Quizzes and Question Banks. After import, verify questions, settings, and Item Banks, then delete the old Classic Quizzes.
Step 1: Check for Classic Quizzes in your Course.
Open “Quizzes” in your course's left-hand navigation menu. Classic Quizzes are marked with a rocket icon. These are the quizzes we'll be converting.
Step 2: Go to “Settings” and click “Import Course Content.”
Click Settings in the course navigation, then click Import Course Content on the right-hand side of the page.
Step 3: Select Content Type to “Copy a Canvas Course.”
On the Import Content page, open the “Select Content Type“ dropdown and choose “Copy a Canvas Course.“
Step 4: Search for your own course and check “Convert content to New Quizzes.”
In the Search for a course field, search for the course you're currently in (you can use its course ID from the browser's URL, or search by name) and select it from the results. Under Options, make sure Convert content to New Quizzes is checked.
Step 5: Choose “Select specific content” and “Convert content to New Quizzes” then add to the import queue.
Choose Select specific content instead of All content so you can control exactly what gets converted, then select “Convert content to New Quizzes” and finally click Add to Import Queue.
Step 6: Click Select content on the new import job.
A new Course Copy job appears at the top of the Content imports list with a status of Waiting for selection. Click Select content to choose exactly what to bring over.
Step 7: Check both “Quizzes and Question Banks”, then “click Select Content”
In the Select Content for Import window, check the box next to Quizzes to convert your quizzes and just as important, check the box next to Question Banks. Classic Quizzes pull questions from Question Banks, but New Quizzes use Item Banks instead, so a Question Bank won't come along automatically just because you selected its quiz. Selecting it here is what converts it into an Item Bank. Once everything you need is checked, click Select Content.
Step 8: Wait for the import to finish.
The job's status will update from Queued to Completed once Canvas finishes converting your selected content.
Step 9: Review your new New Quizzes assignments.
Go to Assignments (or Quizzes). You'll now see two copies of each quiz the original Classic Quiz and a new duplicate marked with the New Quizzes solid rocket icon. Open the new versions to confirm the questions, points, and settings converted correctly, and check Item Banks to confirm your Question Banks converted successfully as well.
Step 10: Delete the old Classic Quizzes once you've confirmed everything converted correctly.
Once you've verified the New Quizzes versions are accurate, use the “⋮ ”menu on the old Classic Quizzes assignment group (or on individual quizzes) and click Delete so students aren't confused by duplicate quizzes.
Step 11: Confirm only the New Quizzes versions remain.
Your Assignments page should now show a single set of quizzes, all using the New Quizzes solid rocket icon.
Note: If you only convert Quizzes and leave Question Banks unchecked, the New Quizzes versions may be missing questions that were originally pulled from a Question Bank, since New Quizzes references Item Banks instead of Question Banks.
