This article is for students who need help accessing a Google Doc that their professor has shared through Blackboard or via email. To gain access to Google Docs shared by instructors within a specific Blackboard course or via email, follow the step-by-step instructions provided below.
The main reason why students are denied access to a Google Document is because they are logged into the wrong profile while using the Google Chrome browser. If you are using Chrome, then you must be signed into your OC account ending in @eagles.oc.edu (or @oc.edu). Below, we will show you how to login to the right profile while using Chrome, and we will also show you how to gain access to the Google Doc while using a browser other than Chrome (such as Safari, Firefox, etc).
Safari
Safari is one of the few web browsers that does not have profiles in the way other browsers do.
Step 1: When you open Safari, navigate to Blackboard (bb.oc.edu). Sign into your course and click on the Google Document that has been posted. (Or if it's been sent to your email, navigate there and click on the Google Doc.)
Step 2: A pop-up window should appear from Google, prompting you to sign in. Make sure to sign in with your student OC email.
Success! It should take you right into the Google Document that has been shared with you.
Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Others
In Firefox and Microsoft edge and in most other popular browsers, you are able to create different profiles in your browser, just like in Chrome. If you are signed in to a profile with your OC student email address, you should have access to any shared Google doc from your professor. Please reference the Google Chrome section to get an idea of what this will look like.
Again, in some cases, your instructors may have the wrong settings on their documents, which means none of the steps above will help you access the document. In these rare situations, your instructors needs to hear from you so they can adjust their document settings.
If you have attempted the recommendations above and still have trouble, reach out to your instructor asking if he or she would double-check the document settings. If your instructor verifies the settings are open for all OC users, then reach out to Support Central for further assistance.
If you have any questions or need any further assistance, please email Support Central at supportcentral@oc.edu or call 405 - 425 - 5555
