In this recipe, we're going to show you two different ways to add "Alt-Text," or "Alternative Text," to Images. As you may know, Alt-Text is incredibly important to those who may have difficulty seeing well. Alt-Text allows assistive technologies to "read" the description of the image as a stand in for seeing the image itself.
Adding Alt-Text When Adding an Image
Step 1: To add an image, hover over Course Content in your Blackboard course.
Step 2: In the drop down menu, click Image.
Blackboard will now open up a new window.
Step 3: In the text box next to Name, enter a name for the image.
Step 4: Click the button labeled Browse My Computer, locate the image file you want to upload to your course, and click Open.
Step 5: In the text box next to Alt Text, enter the alt text for the image. Imagine what you would want to hear if you had to close your eyes and listen to someone describe what they were seeing.
Step 6: Optional: Add a description for the image in the text box under Long Description (this will appear below the image).
Step 7: Click Submit.
Success! The first way of adding Alt-Text has been completed.
Adding Alt-Text When Adding an Item
Step 1: To add an item, hover over Course Content in your Blackboard course.
Step 2: In the drop down menu, click Item.
Blackboard will now open up a new window.
Step 3: In the text box next to Name, enter a name for the item.
Step 4: Now, select the "plus" sign at the bottom of the toolbar.
Step 5: Select "Insert Local Files" if the photo is on your computer, or select "Insert from Cloud Service" if the photo is on Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or Dropbox.
Once the image is selected, Right-Click or Double-Tap on the image inside the item box. Then, select "Image" from the options listed.
Step 7: Under "Alternative Text," write the description that, if your eyes were closed, you would want to hear.
Success! The second way of adding Alternative Text has been completed.
