A grade column in Blackboard set as an "External Grade" allows an instructor to share the grades in the column with OC.
Students' semester averages at midterm and at term completion are reported to the Registrar's Office in OC's Faculty Tools (facultytools.oc.edu). Instructors who would like to avoid manually entering grades from Blackboard into Faculty Tools will benefit from using the "External Grade" setting for a more automated system.
For COI courses, not only is the external grade shared with OC, it is transferred into a dashboard to assist the mentors in monitoring students' progress.
Sadly, each semester Blackboard adds a new default "Total" column that has been set to be your external grade.
Most likely, your Blackboard gradebook doesn't need this default Total column; therefore, you need to delete it. However, you can't delete the default "Total" column until you set a new column as the external grade.
Each semester, you must decide which column is set as the external grade (and potentially adjust settings). The directions below describe how to select your column as an"External Grade" column and the needed settings to be adjusted.
Note: For the External Grade to work, be sure the column offers a "Letter" grade (or Nursing Letter Grade when appropriate).
The External Grade icon appears in the column header as a grey circle with a green checkmark.
Set Column as External Grade

- Go to the Full Grade Center for the course you wish the edit.
- Click the grey arrow next to the column you wish to make the External Grade.
- Click Set as External Grade.
Success, if you see a green checkmark next to the name of the new external column.

External Grade must be a Letter Grade
In addition, for the External Grade to work with the OC system, the column must have the "Primary Display" of the column to be set to be a "Letter Grade." To do this,
- Go to the External Grade column.
- Click the grey arrow to the right of the title of your External Grade.
- Select Edit Column Information from the pop-up menu.
- For the "Primary Display," select "Letter" (or "Nursing Letter," if appropriate).
Note: Students can ONLY see the Primary Display. Only instructor gradebooks can have a primary and secondary grade displayed in the grade column.
