Blackboard Test/Quiz Generator converts test questions in Word or Notepad to a Blackboard Test or Pool. It functions similar to the Respondus application (Windows only), but does not require any software download and is accessible on Mac or Windows.
Simply type or paste your quiz in the text area and click the Create Quiz button. This will produce a zip file that you can import into the Pool Manager in Blackboard.
For example, a Multiple Choice question could be added using the following format:
- Question on a single line; wrapping to the next line is ok, but no returns until the question is finished
- Answers immediately following the question. No blank lines.
- Asterisk (*) in front of the correct choice for Multiple Choice and Multiple Answer question types.
- Place a single blank line between questions.

- (note: the a. and b. option are not answers but answers that will be marked correct. This is helpful for when spelling counts or other symbols are correct)
- Matching:
- match 6. Match the chapters with their topics.
- a) Chapter 13/Exception Handling
- b) Chapter 16/File Processing
- c) Chapter 10/OOP & Classes
- d) Chapter 15/Chars, C-Strings, & the String Class
- e) Chapter 12/Not covered in this class
- Write your text/quiz questions in word (or use publisher test banks).
- Make sure the questions and answers match the associated formats (see links above).
- Highlight all (Control+A on Windows, Command+A on Mac), and copy (Control+C or Command+C).
- Go to http://ed.oc.edu/blackboardquizgenerator/.
- Provide a Test Name in the field.
- Paste the copied text into the text area.
- Click the Generate Test Questions button at the bottom.
- Check to see if the number of questions detected matches the number you intended.
- Check to make sure all questions are “green” and that it says Successful at the top (questions highlighted in red will offer hintns when hovered over to help fix them).
- Decide if you would like to download test questions or question pool then click on the button to download the package to your computer.
- Go to your course in Blackboard.
Follow steps 12 - 15 (if you downloaded question pool.)
- Navigate to ... Control Panel → Course Tools → Test, Surveys, and Pools → Pools → Import Pool.
- Click on Browse My Computer, usually in your downloads folder select the file named with the test name you gave it (it should be a .zip file), and click Submit/Open → Submit → Ok.
- The questions are now converted to Blackboard format and available to be used for assessments.
- Now you will need to open/create a test or quiz and reuse the questions from this pool.
Follow steps 16 - 18 (if you downloaded your questions as test questions.)
- Navigate to ... Control Panel → Course Tools → Test, Surveys, and Pools → Tests → Build Test.
- Enter a name for your test as well any descriptions or instructions you might have for it.
- Click Upload Questions.
- Click on Browse, (the file is usually in your downloads folder) select the file named with the test name you gave it (it will be a .txt file), and click Submit/Open → Submit → Ok.
- The questions are now converted to Blackboard format and available to be used for assessments.
