This guide provides step-by-step instructions for instructors on how to create and configure a Blackboard exam that requires Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor, while also allowing students to use the desktop version of Microsoft Excel during the assessment.
Step 1: Create Your Exam in Blackboard
Before you can apply any Respondus settings, you must first build the exam within your Blackboard course.
If you have already created an Excel-based exam, skip to Step 2: Access the Respondus Dashboard
1. Navigate to a content area in your course (e.g., "Exams","Tests," "Content").
2. Click on the Assessments menu and select Test.
3. On the "Create Test" page, click Create to build a new test. Give it a name (e.g., "Midterm Exam with Excel Component") and an optional description and instructions. Click Submit.
4. You will now be on the "Test Canvas" page. This is where you add your questions.
5. Add a File Response question. This is the most critical step, as it provides the button for students to upload their completed Excel file.
- Click Create Question and select File Response.
- In the "Question Text," provide clear instructions, such as: "Please open the Excel file, complete it, save your work, and upload the file here."
5. Add the Excel File for Students to Download. Click Submit.
Add other questions (like Multiple Choice or True/False) to your exam as needed to make it a complete assessment.
7. Once you have added all questions, click OK. The page will navigate back to Create Test Page and have the Test that we have created selected in the "Add an Existing Test" option, simply click on submit.
8. On the "Test Options" page, configure the exam's availability, due date, password and other standard settings. Click Submit to deploy the test in your course.
Step 2: Access the Respondus Dashboard
With the test now built and deployed in your course, you can access the Respondus tool to apply the security settings.
1. In your course's left-hand navigation menu, scroll down to the Course Management control panel.
2. Click on Course Tools.
3. Scroll down the list and select Respondus LockDown Browser.
Step 3: Configure Respondus Settings for the Exam
You will now see the Respondus Dashboard, which lists all deployed tests in your course.
1. Locate the test you want to configure. Click the drop-down arrow (chevron icon) to the left of the test title and select Settings.
2. On the settings page, apply the following configurations in order:
- (1) Require Respondus LockDown Browser: Select the radio button for Require Respondus LockDown Browser for this exam.
- (2) Require Respondus Monitor: Select Webcam + Screen.
- (3) Expand Advanced Settings: Click the [+] Advanced Settings link to show more options.
- (4) Allow Excel: Check the box for Allow switching to MS Excel during the assessment.
3. Click Save + Close at the bottom of the page.
The exam is now fully configured. In the Respondus Dashboard, you will see "- Required" listed under both the "LockDown Browser" and "Respondus Monitor" columns for your test.
It is a best practice to create a simple, ungraded practice quiz with these settings enabled. This allows students to test their setup and become familiar with switching between LockDown Browser and Excel before a high-stakes exam. Also, inform students in advance that Microsoft Excel must be installed beforehand, as they will not be able to quit the exam to install it.
