Computer Updates - Mac

Computer updates are actually good for your computer. These updates include security fixes and other changes that help Mac computers continue to operate smoothly. With many new virus threats appearing on a daily basis, the developers of the Mac operating systems are always producing updates to ensure the security of your data.

Depending on how many updates you need, installation may take up to a few hours. You may have to restart your computer when the updates are finished in order to complete the installation and may require a system restart. Please save and close out of all other programs now.

Open "Software Update"

Open "Software Update"
  1. Click the Apple icon in the menu bar at the top-left corner of the screen
  2. From the menu, select Software Update...



The computer will check for any new updates that are available.

Install Available Updates

Click "Install" to Install Any Available Updates
  • Click Install
  • If the update requires a restart, the button may say Install and restart.


  1. Enter your username.
  2. Enter your password.
  3. Click OK

Wait for Updates to Install

Wait for Updates to Install

This may take several minutes.


Click "OK" to Finish

Click OK


You have successfully installed updates on your Apple computer.
