Zipping or compressing a file will make a large file smaller so that you can save space on your hard drive. It is often useful to zip a file before burning it to a CD or transferring it over the network. The smaller the file, the faster it will transfer. As long as a file is zipped, it cannot be used again until it is unzipped.
In Windows
- Find the file that you would like to zip.
- Right-click on the file to reveal a drop-down menu.
- From the drop-down menu, select "Add to filename.zip" or "Add to filename.rar"
In Mac
- Find the file that you would like to zip.
- Right-click on the file to reveal a drop-down menu.
- From the drop-down menu, select the Compress option.
Location
The file that was zipped will appear in the same location as the original file. The zipped/compressed file will have ".zip" or ".rar" as an extension.
Success!
You have successfully compressed or zipped a file on your computer.
